South San Diego Community Challenges Recession With Art for “92173: Artists of San Ysidro”
Casa Familiar, San Ysidro’s leading Community Service Agency, took the very risky step of investing in the creation of a community Art Space when the economy was beginning its downward slope in 2007. Today, two years later, with an Economic Recession recently made official and a worsening political climate in neighboring Tijuana, the existence of this alternative cultural space is just that much more important.
THE FRONT: A Collaborative of Art, Culture, Design and Urbanism is centrally located on the San Ysidro Blvd in San Ysidro, CA. Since its inauguration in 2007 the space has served to exhibit the artwork of both local and internationally known artists, as well as a host of musical, cultural and community events. With over 3,000 square feet of gallery space, THE FRONT is the only multi-use space of it’s kind in the South Bay.
As a non-profit organization, Casa Familiar is feeling the brunt of the economic recession, but understands that Art and Cultural programming are equally important in a time when frustration, depression and confusion fill the minds and hearts of its community. With the support of organizations such as the San Diego Foundation and its local artists and community members, THE FRONT remains constant in its mission to provide the community with a safe space to create and exhibit artistic and cultural expression.
Casa Familiar invites the entire community to visit THE FRONT as an alternative to more expensive outings and forms of entertainment. THE FRONT is family friendly and has a wide array of programming suitable to people of all ages. Art Exhibits and community events are open to the community free of cost, (unless otherwise stated). Next in the calendar is the Opening Reception for “92173: Artists of San Ysidro” an art exhibit featuring the work of San Ysidro artists to take place on February 6th, 2009 at 7pm and on March 6th is the 2nd Annual International Womens Day Noche de Cultura with art, music, dance, food and culture to celebrate and honor women everywhere.
