Marc Chagall: Known For Her Artistic Talent
French painter Marc Chagall was born on July 7, 1887, in the ghetto in the town of Vitsyebsk in White Russia. His family was Jewish and he was brought up in Hasidic tradition. As a very young child, Chagall’s mother supported his interest in art. She was able to enroll him in an art school in St. Petersburg, where he continued the expansion of his artistic talent.
Chagall returned home to Vitsyebsk and became engaged to Bella Rosenfeld. Twelve years would pass before he and Bella were married in 1915.
In 1910, Chagall went to study art in Paris. He stayed in Paris, which was widely regarded as “the Mecca of Art”, for four years, until 1914. According to historical documents, Chagall spent most of his life in St. Petersburg, Vitsyebsk, or Paris.
Chagall held several different positions during his lifetime, including Commissar for Fine Art and art director of the Moscow Jewish State Theatre.
The art by Chagall has a single thread running through it—his own unique way of blending reality with the imaginary. His use of color and form can be partly attributed to Russian expressionism, but was also influenced by French cubism. Perhaps this is what makes his work so distinctively his.
Chagall often painted very personal images from his own private life. Many of his paintings also represent his colorful memories of Russian-Jewish village scenes and the treatment of Jewish issues. He had a whole series that dealt with Biblical themes. This Biblical representation is evident in the 12 stained glass windows in the Hadassah Hospital.
Chagall used several mediums for his art. He worked with stained glass, ceramics, sculpture, and of course canvas. One of his more famous works is a canvas he finished in 1964 that covers the ceiling of the Opera in Paris.
