Any clues on a children’s book published around 1994 about child friendly mystery riddles?
When I was 10 years old and in Elementary, my English teacher introduced a children’s mystery / riddles book. It has several short mystery riddles and cute hand-drawn black and white illustrations. i would really like to find this book for my children. i believe it was published in 1994 – 1995 or earlier. If any one has a clue about the title and author I would really appreciate it! Thanks!
I guess it could be anything, but was it maybe “Adventures of the Black Hand Gang” by Hans Jurgen Press? It was about a group of kids who solved mysteries. Their names are Frank, Ralph, Angela, and Keith W. S. (With Squirrel). The thing that sets these books apart (there were a few about the Black Hand Gang) from the Encyclopedia Brown books are the detailed black and white drawings that show the clues. In the first book I named, the kids are hanging out together, and the girl says there is someone living in a house that’s been vacant for three years. Opposite this page is a full page Black And White Drawing of a brambly looking mansion, and you can see what’s going on in the neighborhood — it’s kind of a birds eye view. At the bottom of the page it asks, “How did Angela know someone was living in the house?” and you’re supposed to look at the picture and figure out how she knew before you turn the page. At the beginning of the next page, the answer is given, but it’s not just stated outright, it’s kind of woven into the text of the story.
This is an awesome book that I read in about 1979. Until last year, though, I had a vague memory but had no idea what the book was, or how to go about finding it, and someone suggested it to me. It was surprising how much came flooding back when I received my copy. I hope the same thing happens to you!
