Drawing & Illustration Lessons : How to Draw Fashion Sketches
How do I improve my freehand drawing skills/sketching skills?
Normally when I practise drawing, I don’t worry about my speed. I worry more about getting contour accurate and the tones. So often i am taking from half an hour to 2 hours drawing an object in different lighting conditions.
Should I keep going like this or should i do more timed/quicker drawings if i want to improve freehand drawing skills, ones i can do quickly like a sketch?
Simplest answer: draw, Draw, DRAW! Repeat, repeat, repeat. Draw all the time. Carry a little sketchbook with you at all times and draw what’s around you. Become familiar with underlying shapes and basic foundation of everyday objects all around you. I’m not sure what kinds of things you’re drawing now, but if it’s still life, try to lightly work out the overall basic shapes before you start filling in details and lighting. A detailed drawing with a SOLID foundation is better than a detailed drawing with a poor foundation.
Again, draw often. The more you draw, the quicker you’ll get. Before you know it, drawing will become second nature to you, and speed won’t even be an issue anymore. You WILL see results. I’ve been drawing caricatures professionally for over 3 years now, and when I started, it took me nearly a half-hour just to draw one person’s face. Now I can do ‘em in 5 minutes (and they look MUCH better than they did 3 years ago!). I don’t even think about time anymore. Yet I’m always striving to become a better artist.
Buy instruction books, or check them out at your local library. Take life drawing classes. Go to the zoo and observe the animals. Sit in a park and draw everything around you.
An artist by the name of Sheldon Borenstein has this wise quote:
“As an artist you have 10,000 bad drawings given to you at birth. Now spend your lifetime getting them out!”
