Drawings and Illustrations
What kind of pens should I use for professional quality illustrations?
I want to do some high quality drawings like the ones in Spawn and Marvel comics. I have the ability but I lack the knowledge and supplies. What kind of pens, paper, and etc. do I need?
I have been drawing for almost sixty years. I have been doing some serious inking for nearly fifty. I have used everything from steel nibbed, dipping drawing pens (traditional, with good, variable lines), crowquills (very fine lines but not suitible for duplication and printing processes), bamboo pens (lots of fun!) feather quills, fine tipped brushes, technical pens like Rapidographs (nice clean lines, but very boring art and they take a LOT of maintenance), but, I have finally settled on plain, ordinary Sharpie markers, both fine and ultra fine for my ink pens of choice.
They are permanent, very black, quick drying and cheap. They have the added advantage of being available at virtually every grocery market, convenienc and liquor store and bait shop in the nation, twenty-four hours a day. If I EVER run dry, I know I can find a replacement easily without having to run around town trying to find an art or office supply store.
As far as paper, it depends on the work being done. Any decent drawing paper will take ink very well, but for finely detailed comic illustration, I recommend a good, cold pressed Bristol board or equivilant.
I have gone nearly 100% digital in recent years, but for color work, my tools of choice were color markers such as those made by Pantone, Design and several others.
