Modern Abstract Art

Modern Abstract Art

Migrant Mother photo – What period of art is it in?

I’ve been studying the photo of the Migrant Mother but I cannot find in what age of art it is labeled in.

Is it considered modern art? Abstract?

Does anyone know?

Thank you :)

Dorothea Lange was part of a group of photojournalists working for the agency Magnum, which is still in existence. Magnum photographers pushed the aesthetics of journalistic photography to a new level of excellence. I wouldn’t necessarily classify her work with a particular art movement, but it is important to note her association with Magnum.

As an afterthought, I disagree with the statement made that her work, and photographs in general, are not art. It’s still a debatable subject, but I think most people agree that a camera can be used to create something just as aesthetically pleasing and meaningful as with any other medium. It’s true that Lange was using photography to document a way of life, but she did it in a very thoughtful and purposeful way with the intension of invoking an emotional response in the viewer.
