What type of paintings make it to a museum?

I know a lot of people who created awesome photo realistic paintings by hand but I never hear any of them making to a museum. What do you think makes a painting famous? Also what type of style if mastered has a better chance of getting into a museum?

Starry Night compared to a photo realistic painting is almost night and day in skill.

Sadly what makes a painting famous is often a matter of marketing the artist than the artist’s talent these days. Talent is essential, but it isn’t what makes a painter famous. Look at some of the most famous painters in the 20th century- Salvadore Dali used to walk around New York with a lobster on a leash. Did that make him a painter worth admiring? No. But it sure made him stand out! Now in his case, he was also incredibly talented. But not all famous painters are as gifted.
Sometimes it is a new technique or a new style that makes an artist stand out. As I said, it is never talent alone, but talent and… an agent, a lobster, a revelation. hard to say. But I agree it does seem unjust. But art is not objective and the best one doesn’t always win.
